Painting

A career in the painting trade can include painting houses, commercial buildings, bridges and industrial sites. A well-trained painter works safely, quickly, efficiently and is proud to complete projects that please their customers. CITC’s three-year painting program prepares workers for a wide range of rewarding painting careers with technical and hands-on training. Training topics range from Surface Preparation, Wood Finishing, Painting with Rollers & Brushes, Painting with Sprayers on various surfaces and Texturing.

Students will be required to have access to a computer or tablet device with a working camera and microphone. Additionally, all students will need to have access to a reliable internet source when classes begin in the fall. Note: It is crucial that students have the required physical textbooks and class materials by the first day of class. Students will be instructed on how to purchase the required e-text(s) on the first day of class. A student who does not have all required e-texts, textbooks and materials by the end of the second week may be dismissed from class and charged with an absence.  To purchase the stand alone NCCERConnect with e-text, students will need a Course ID #. Course ID will be provided by the course instructor. CITC Instructor will provide the Course ID no later than the first day of class. Students are expected to purchase the required e-texts during the first day of class. .

CITC strives to offer a variety of class schedules and locations for students to select from. To ensure your place in a class of your choice CITC encourages your registration as soon as registration opens.

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. If the class you have selected is full, you will be transferred into the next available class at the CITC facility nearest your home zip code.

PAINTING 101: FALL QUARTER

Students will thoroughly review construction site safety and shop safety and are introduced to trade mathematics; safe use of basic hand and power tools; blueprint reading; rigging and an overview of careers in painting. Schedule for lab dates will be handed out the first night of class each quarter.   Includes OSHA 10 training.

PAINTING 102: WINTER QUARTER

Students will learn about painting safety; ladders, scaffolds, lifts and fall protection; identifying surface/substrate materials and conditions; protecting adjacent surfaces; basic surface preparation.

PAINTING 103: SPRING QUARTER

Students will learn about repair using sealants and fillers; be introduced to paints and coatings; and practice brushing & rolling paints and coatings.

PAINTING 201: FALL QUARTER

Students will learn about painting failures & remedies; job planning and completion; chemical cleaning and stripping; low pressure water cleaning; abrasive blasting. Schedule for lab dates will be handed out the first night of class each quarter.

PAINTING 202: WINTER QUARTER

Students will learn about drywall finishing and patching; stains; clear finishes; wood finishing; and will review green building practices.

PAINTING 203: SPRING QUARTER

Students will learn about high performance coatings; conventional, airless and HVLP spray painting, industrial applications and environment

Students will learn about graphics, texturing and spraying with special devices, industrial coatings, industrial specific safety measures.

CITC’s instructors are highly skilled journey-level workers who bring their knowledge and years of trade experience into the classroom. All CITC instructors have been certified certification by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

David Po’Ohina started in the trade in 2002. Joined the CITC faculty in 2022.

Erik Pearson started in the trade in 2003. CITC graduate and Student of the Year in 2006. Became a CITC faculty member in 2010.

Josh Johnson started in the trade in 2006. Became a CITC faculty member in 2020.
